Kid ‘n Play is an American hip-hop and comedy duo from New York City that was popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The duo was composed of Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin working alongside their DJ, Mark “DJ Wiz” Eastmond. Besides their successful musical careers, Kid ‘n Play are also notable for branching out into acting.

The pair met while performing in rival high school groups The Turnout Brothers and The Super Lovers, and initially formed their duo under the name The Fresh Force Crew. In 1986 She’s a Skeezer and Rock Me were recorded. By 1987 they had changed their name to Kid ‘n Play.

Kid ‘n Play recorded three albums together between 1988 and 1991: 2 Hype (1988), Kid ‘n Play’s Funhouse (1990), and Face the Nation (1991). Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor, the producer for Salt-n-Pepa (who had been a member of the The Super Lovers with Play) served as Kid ‘n Play’s manager and producer during the early portion of their career. All three albums focused upon positive lyrics backed by pop-friendly instrumental tracks. Among the group’s most successful singles were 1989′s “Rollin’ with Kid ‘n Play” (#11 on the Billboard R&B singles chart), 1990s “Funhouse” (#1 on the Billboard rap singles chart), and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody” (another #1 rap hit). The group’s stage show highlighted their teen-friendly personalities, and dances such as their trademark, the Kick Step. Kid’s visual trademark was his hi-top fade haircut, which stood ten inches high at its peak. Martin regularly wore eight-ball jackets.

Kid ‘n Play were also notable for their dance known as the Funky Charleston, first seen in their video “Gittin Funky”. Also affectionately known as the Kid and Play Kickstep, it was influenced by the 1920s era dance the Charleston. The Funky Charleston featured the New Jack Swing-aerobic dance moves typical of late 1980s urban street dancing. Unlike the original Charleston, The Funky Charleston requires two participants instead of one. This dance also was made quite popular in Kid ‘n Play’s feature film House Party, in which Kid and Play have a dance competition with Tisha Campbell and A.J. Johnson.

Summer is winding down into fall. Well for those of you on the east side anyway, and I got to thinking about some of the best summer jams of the 1990′s, and I decided to scour YouTube® for the best of the decade! Of course you all might have different ideas and you’re free to leave those below.

So if you’re planning any Summers end parties and aren’t hiring Fast Lane Magazine’s official party music spinner DJ Dave Stylus for your event then here’s 10 top summer jams, sure to get your party started.

I’m taking you back to the old school cuz I’m an old fool. Back to when the M in Mtv stood for MUSIC! You know; back when Mtv used to actually play Music videos 24/7? These are the best boom box tracks of the 1990′s based on well MY opinion, and I should know because I was there! So let me ask ya, what do ya know about that?

So after the jump prepare to get your 90′s groove on!

Before we move forward I must say some of the suggestions come from Chris Stout over at ManJr.

Bell Biv DeVoe – Poison (1990)

ÀšÃ‚ This was the summer that a trio of former members of New Edition dropped what is arguably one of the best tracks on their debut album. This track really marked the change in the male female dynamic and revealed the epidemic rise of the trouble girl… Well I was with one and man that girl was POISON!

Summertime – DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (1991)

This track right here is a no brainer to say the least. I mean c’mon it’s pretty much a gimme as the title of the track includes the hottest season of the year. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith a.k.a the Fresh Prince even won a Grammy for the tune in 1991. If you havenۉ€ž¢t heard Kool & the Gang’s extra-relaxing Summer Madness tune, the original track that spawned this beat, you should definitely check it out. Itۉ€ž¢s like a melting marshmellow of funky feel-goodness.

Luther Vandross & Janet Jackson – The Best Thing In Life Are Free (1992)

This track featuring the KING of ALL R&B Luther Vandross and The Queen of Pop Miss Jackson if you’re nasty blazed onto airways in the summer of 1992 leading in on the release of the movie it was the title track from. ‘Mo Money probably didn’t do great at the box office but this song burned it up to say the least

Duice – Dazzey Dukes (1993)

In the absence of 2 Live Crew we can’t think of putting a list of 90′s party tracks together without including a Miami bass track and the Afrika Bambaataa Planet Rock Soul Sonic Force. Dazzey Dukes of course named after the short shorts that Nair hair removal products and Catherine Bach of Dukes of Hazzards fame made extremely popular! But hey what man doesn’t like a great ass in a pair of short shorts?

Warren G – Regulate (1994)

I mean really what more is there to say about Regulate? This track could bring out the gangsta boogie in your grandmother! ÀšÃ‚ Regulate is one of the smoothest hip hop / rap tracks to hit the airwaves. Warren G and Nate Dogg (R.I.P) cast some light on the life in Southern California’s city of Long Beach. With an intro from the 80′s hit movie Young Guns, regulate was an instant hit everywhere! And certain to bring out the gangstas at your end of summer party!

Montell Jordan – This Is How We Do It (1995)

At 6′ 8″ Montell Jordan burst on the scene with this stone cold part track which oddly enough sampled 1980′s hip hop superstar Slick Rick’s Children’s Story. This track could get the dance floors in clubs blazing and certainly became an anthem for the best parties going! I remember throwing this on the wheels of steel and watch the floor light up for sure!

2Pac Featuring Dr. Dre – California Love (1996)

California Love hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the most commercially successful record of 2Pac’s career. The piano riff comes from Joe Cocker’s €œWoman to Woman” which was also sampled by the Ultramagnetic MCÃ. Plus, it sure beats Katy Perry in the Donۉ€ž¢t-Forget-California’s-Awesome genre.

Let me just pause here and say that selecting 90s summertime RnB jams is kinda hard after about 1997. Not impossible, mind you. Just much more difficult. In 1997, ہ€œIۉ€ž¢ll Be Missing You€Â and ہ€œCandle in the Wind€Â were big hits in the distinctively non-summer memorial-pop category. Not really good for party tunes. 1997 also saw the rise of bands like Aqua, Hanson, Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. Needless to say, summertimey RnB party music took a big hit that year, but that didnۉ€ž¢t stop a certain British RnB artist from reaching the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in early summer 1997 with, you guessed it€Â¦

Mark Morrison – Return Of The Mack (1997)

ÀšÃ‚ We bailed them out during WWII and the Brits bailed us out with this groovy track which incidentally also sampled Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love”, maybe there is something to be said about TTC and parties. I guess I didn’t get it in the 80′s. ÀšÃ‚ When this track played in the clubs you could see clearly which guys had been coming out of a break up. But either way it is a groove classic and rescued our 1997 summer!

After what was a pathetic R&B / Hip Hop summer in 1997 we were once again back on top and saved from what was a Too Close call with losing out on musical dominance by the Next group! It was all butta baby!

Next – Too Close (1998)

ÀšÃ‚ With an opening line of, I wonder if she can tell I’m hard right now, this is the track you want to have playing as the sun is setting on your end of summer pool party when the girls are still in their bikini’s and have enjoyed an appropriate amount of libation to get them moving right. Just throw this track on and watch the real hottness begin. Who can listen to this song and truly resist moving their hips, now get close to that hottie you’ve been spying all day and let the fun begin! Though ok this may not be a ‘Summer’ song it is undeniable that this is a track that is certainly made for it!

Monifah – Touch It ÀšÃ‚ (1999)

ÀšÃ‚ As we wrap up our list it only seemed appropriate to end with Monifah’s Touch It because after getting all close isn’t that what we were hoping to hear the ladies say to us? Though this track was officially released in 1998 it didn’t really pick up until 1999 and so our judges namely ME say it’s good to go for 1999.

So there you have it! The best of the 90′s dance and hip hop tracks to get your summer’s end party started for sure! I’m actually going to include TWO tracks as bonus tracks that were bangers in the 90′s as well!

TLC – No Scrubs (1995)

ÀšÃ‚ In 1995 the hip hop trio TLC released No Scrubs off their Crazy Sexy Cool LP. Back in the day and by that I mean the late 70′s in New York city we used to use the term Scrubs to describe losers, ala man the Met’s are scrubs this year. ÀšÃ‚ TLC revitalized that word at least for that summer. Am I the only one who thinks that the 1999 Jennifer Lopez album debut track ‘If You Had My Love’ has a very similar sound to scrubs?

I sure would love to have seen what they might have come up with had it not been for the tragic death of Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes in a car accident.

Heavy D & The Boyz ÀšÃ‚ - Nuttin’ But Love (1994)

ÀšÃ‚ Lest we not forget mr. Heavy D who dropped this track on us in 1994 for all the gold diggin women of the 90′s and I guess it even applies to chicks today. ÀšÃ‚ I got nothin but love for ya honies! That’s right before he was serving up the bomb dishes on the hit show Bones Heavy D was dropping some fun party raps on the crowds. This was the first album after one of his dancers and close friends fell off stage to his death during a performance.

Take note of all the cameos from actors and super models. Even the Noxema girl makes an appearance!

In an industry that has performers constantly trying to define and redefine themselves to stand out from the rest. And yet they often sound exactly the same as the last performer. As such we present to you for this week’s Bump or Dump the sexy and highly sexual (Check Her VERY NSFW store to see how sexy she gets) Leah Hilton. An artist who has set herself apart with her lyrics and damn near pornographic video, which is what I personally love about this little girl!

About the only way I can think to define this video is well, porno pop. They lyrics are just how we like em, dirty, and the sound is sultry! ÀšÃ‚ So it’s up to you guys to let us know if we’re gonna Bump or Dump this track, and the video!

Tami was the Diva team lead and I can’t help but think about how awesome it was when I had a full team of five girls which is why we’re once again on the search for the new team of High Speed Divas.

I figured I’ve spent a lot of time highlighting the High Speed Divas and have for the most part not mentioned a lot of the Shotgun Divas. And YES there is a difference in the two. After the jump find out the difference between High Speed Divas and Shotgun Divas and find out if you qualify.

High Speed Divas are the ladies that grace or are slated to grace a cover of Fast Lane Magazine! Shotgun Divas however are the ladies who comprise the remaining parts of the magazine. They aren’t on the cover but they sure look good inside! High Speed Divas are either celebrities or models who work extra hard to earn a cover by not only her look but her promotions of Fast Lane Magazine!

I happened to come across these images of the incredibly gorgeous Jeniece Harper who we shot in a Las Vegas recording studio if you couldn’t tell. Also in these images are @TamiCarney who happens to be a former High Speed Divas team leader; and clothing designer Alena Dawn.

Incidentally as a point of trivia which may become relevant at some point in the distant future, the Editor In Chief at Fast Lane Magazine is also featured in this video as much as he was trying to avoid the cameras it didn’t work. I also want to thank Matt Gebhard for all his assistance in making this shoot happen. This was shot in Las Vegas one evening, and oddly enough it was very last minute! I will probably be posting the shoot notes online at my photography website DJTalStudio in the next few days with more images from the shoot.

The hair and make-up for the girls was done by the incredible make up artist Daniel Chinchilla you should check him out and also he has his own cosmetics line.
