<p>Fast Lane Lifestyle Magazine&#8217;s Top 5 Coolest 80&#8242;s Movies We&#8217;d like to see Remade!  Because we enjoyed them so much.</p>
<p>Hollywood is spending a lot of time rebooting/remaking 80&#8242;s movies and TV shows, and we couldn&#8217;t help but think of 5 movies from the 80&#8242;s we&#8217;d like to see redone! With Fame, Footloose, the coming Red Dawn, Top Gun, and Blade Runner, we thought it&#8217;d be fun to figure out 5 we&#8217;d like to see remade!</p>
<p>Below is our list of the top 5 movies and who we&#8217;d cast in the now iconic if not legendary roles! Check em out and let us know your thoughts! I am sure you all will be surprised at the frontiers we crossed for our #1 pick!  If you can think of any we might have &#8220;missed&#8221; let us know by leaving a comment below AND include who you would cast to play the lead roles! So get ready cause here we go!<span id="more-7317"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/flashdance52.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7319" title="Directed by Adrian Lyne. With Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri, Lilia Skala, Sunny Johnson. " src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/flashdance52.jpg" alt="Directed by Adrian Lyne. With Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri, Lilia Skala, Sunny Johnson. " width="604" height="378" /> </a></p>
<h2>5. Flashdance &#8211; 1983</h2>
<p>Directed by Adrian Lyne. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. With Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri, Lilia Skala, Sunny Johnson. Who could possibly forget two of the film&#8217;s most iconic moments. The water scene and that running in place with the leggings.</p>
<p>18-year-old Alexandra &#8220;Alex&#8221; Owens (Jennifer Beals) works as a welder at a steel mill in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the day, and as a dancer at Mawby&#8217;s bar in the evenings. She lives alone in a converted warehouse with her pet dog, Grunt.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yJ6MtRfChg0" frameborder="0" width="600" height="335"></iframe></p>
<p>Despite a lack of formal dance training, she aspires to be accepted by a prestigious dance school, the fictional Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. During one of her performances at Mawby&#8217;s, she attracts the interest of Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri), her boss at the steel mill, and he learns that Alex is one of his employees.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/jessica-biel-Fast-Lane-Magazine-DJ-Foothill001.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7320" title="jessica-biel-Fast-Lane-Magazine-DJ-Foothill001" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/jessica-biel-Fast-Lane-Magazine-DJ-Foothill001.jpg" alt="" width="567" height="600" /> </a></p>
<p>Well, we think it&#8217;d be a swell idea to remake this movie. But this time with Jessica Beil in the title role. And hey we even keep the names close. But really who wouldn&#8217;t want to see Jessica&#8217;s amazing posterior shaking away in the now iconic, Maniac sequence with the splashdown. Now that my friends is cinema!</p>
<p>The Irene Cara &#8216;What a feeling&#8221; sequence from the movie has been duplicated several times in parody and homage, by folks like Jennifer Lopez and Geri Halliwell formerly of the spice girls!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/an-officer-and-a-gentleman1982-fastlanemag-movies001.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7321" title="an officer and a gentleman1982 fastlanemag movies001" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/an-officer-and-a-gentleman1982-fastlanemag-movies001.jpg" alt="an officer and a gentleman1982 fastlanemag movies001" width="604" height="355" /> </a></p>
<h2>4. An Officer &amp; A Gentleman &#8211; 1982</h2>
<p>Directed by Taylor Hackford. With Richard Gere, Debra Winger, David Keith, Lou Gossett Jr. A young man must complete his work at a Navy Flight school to become an aviator, with the help of a tough gunnery sergeant and his new girlfriend.</p>
<p>Zachary &#8220;Zack&#8221; Mayo (Richard Gere) has been living with his father Byron (Robert Loggia), a U.S. Navy boatswain&#8217;s mate, since early adolescence, after Zack&#8217;s mother committed suicide. Hoping to put his life on a different path, Zack signs up for the Navy&#8217;s Aviator Officer Candidate School.</p>
<p><iframe style="border-style: initial; border-color: initial; text-align: center;" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KsNq_L1oWyE" frameborder="0" width="600" height="335"></iframe></p>
<p>Zack and his fellow OCs are &#8220;welcomed&#8221; by their head drill instructor, Marine Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley (Louis Gossett, Jr.). Foley makes it clear that the program is designed to eliminate as many cadets as possible, and that only the best will earn their &#8220;prize&#8221;, a commission in the Navy and a $1,000,000 flight education. Zack hits it off with fellow recruit Sid Worley (David Keith) and female recruit Casey Seeger (Lisa Eilbacher).</p>
<p>Zack and Sid meet two local girls at a Navy-hosted dance &#8211; factory workers Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger) and Lynette Pomeroy (Lisa Blount), with whom each begins a romantic relationship.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/jeremy-renner-elisha-cuthbert-dennis-haysbert-officer-and-a-gentleman-fast-lane-magazine-movie-remakes.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7322" title="jeremy-renner-elisha-cuthbert-dennis-haysbert-officer-and-a-gentleman-fast-lane-magazine-movie-remakes" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/jeremy-renner-elisha-cuthbert-dennis-haysbert-officer-and-a-gentleman-fast-lane-magazine-movie-remakes.jpg" alt="jeremy-renner-elisha-cuthbert-dennis-haysbert-officer-and-a-gentleman-fast-lane-magazine-movie-remakes" width="604" height="302" /> </a></p>
<p>For the remake we&#8217;ve selected Jeremy Renner (S.W.A.T, The Avengers) in the title role with Elisha Cuthbert (24, The Girl Next Door) as the character played by Debra Winger (Wonder Woman 1976) and Dennis Haysbert (24, The Unit) as Sgt. Emil Foley, and Richard Gere to play the part of Byron Mayo !</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/visionquest.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7323" title="M8DVIQU EC003" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/visionquest.jpg" alt="" width="604" height="483" /> </a></p>
<h2>3. Vision Quest &#8211; 1985</h2>
<p>Directed by Harold Becker. With Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino, Michael Schoeffling, Ronny Cox. Vision Quest is a coming of age movie in which high school wrestler Louden Swain decides he wants to be something more than an average high school athlete and sets his sights on a prize that many don&#8217;t think he can win &#8211; he then sets out to reach his goal alone, without much support from his father or coach.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-he8aLdB0KA" frameborder="0" width="600" height="437"></iframe></p>
<p>His father (Ronny Cox) rents a room to a young drifter, Carla. Swain falls in love with her and she helps him stay focused and prevents him from losing sight of his goals.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/zoe_saldana_taylor_lautner_fastlanemag_Remakes.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7324" title="zoe_saldana_taylor_lautner_fastlanemag_Remakes" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/zoe_saldana_taylor_lautner_fastlanemag_Remakes.jpg" alt="zoe_saldana_taylor_lautner_fastlanemag_Remakes" width="604" height="453" /> </a></p>
<p>In our remake &#8211; Taylor Lautner plays the title roll while Zoe Saldana plays the uber sexy love interest. Of course we&#8217;d have to spice up the sex scene a bit more. You know, much more skin! And maybe have Christina Aguilera perform crazy for you which was originally done in the movie by Madonna back when she was really hot! Also have Matthew Modine come back and play the father originally played by Ronny Cox (Robocop, Beverly Hills Cop)</p>
<h2><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Running_Scared_fastlanemag_remakes_DJ_Foothill.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7325" title="Running_Scared_fastlanemag_remakes_DJ_Foothill" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Running_Scared_fastlanemag_remakes_DJ_Foothill.jpg" alt="Running_Scared_fastlanemag_remakes_DJ_Foothill" width="604" height="405" /> </a><br />
2. Running Scared &#8211; 1986</h2>
<p>Directed by Peter Hyams. With Gregory Hines, Billy Crystal, Steven Bauer, Darlanne Fluegel,Jimmy Smits.</p>
<p>In the original buddy cop movie; Danny and Ray are two street wise cops in Chicago. When they are almost killed on a case, they are forced to take a vacation by their captain. Key West offers a substantial change over frozen Chicago. They decide to quit and open a bar in Key West.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/W2FHICIsStg" frameborder="0" width="600" height="437"></iframe></p>
<p>Upon returning, they find that Julio, the drug dealer who nearly killed them has made bail and is trying to complete a giant drug deal. They decide to complete their case against Julio before quitting, but then begin being careful. Their effectiveness drops as they find they can&#8217;t operate the way they did before if they don&#8217;t have the edge of a long time commitment.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/eddie_Murphy_owen_wilson_Running_Scared_FastLaneMag-Remake.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7326" title="eddie_Murphy_owen_wilson_Running_Scared_FastLaneMag-Remake" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/eddie_Murphy_owen_wilson_Running_Scared_FastLaneMag-Remake.jpg" alt="eddie_Murphy_owen_wilson_Running_Scared_FastLaneMag-Remake" width="604" height="452" /> </a></p>
<p>In the Fast Lane Magazine remake of this 80&#8242;s classic we&#8217;d reunite Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson to take the roles of Chicago&#8217;s favorite wise cracking cops. And we&#8217;d probably cast Amaury Nolasco (Transformers) as Julio Gonzalez.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/TheLastStarfighter_quad-1.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7328" title="TheLastStarfighter_FastLaneMag_Remakes" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/TheLastStarfighter_quad-1.jpg" alt="TheLastStarfighter_FastLaneMag_Remakes" width="604" height="455" /> </a></p>
<h2>1. The Last Star Fighter &#8211; 1984</h2>
<p>If you&#8217;re a geek and in your 40&#8242;s you remember the words &#8220;You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Zur and the Ko&#8217;dan Armada!&#8221; In fact you probably got pretty excited at seeing that this movie made our list!</p>
<p>Directed by Nick Castle. With <strong>Lance Guest</strong>, <strong>Robert Preston</strong>, <strong>Dan O&#8217;Herlihy</strong>, <strong>Catherine Mary Stewart</strong>.</p>
<p>Alex Rogan is a small-town teenager with big-time dreams. Dreams of College&#8230; of success&#8230; of marrying his girlfriend, Maggie. He&#8217;s just like everyone else, except Alex has a very special talent that no one on Earth can appreciate. But tonight, a mysterious stranger has called on Alex. He&#8217;s come from a galaxy that&#8217;s under attack by an alien force. And Alex&#8217;s unique ability is their last hope. Now he&#8217;s got one extraordinary chance at the dream of a lifetime!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4Q-Qs3loKoc" frameborder="0" width="600" height="335"></iframe></p>
<p><strong> <em>The Last Starfighter</em></strong>, in addition to Disney&#8217;s <strong><em>Tron</em></strong>, has the distinction of being one of cinema&#8217;s earliest films to use extensive computer-generated imagery(CGI) to depict its many starships, environments and battle scenes. This CGI technique, for the time, was a great leap into the future compared to contemporary films such as the previous year&#8217;s <strong><em>Return of the Jedi</em></strong>, which still used static physical models shot by moving film cameras.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/mariel_Jaffe_zac_efron_DJFoothill_Fast_Lane_Magazine_remake_The_Last_Starfighter.jpg" rel="lightbox" > <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7329" title="mariel_Jaffe_zac_efron_DJFoothill_Fast_Lane_Magazine_remake_The_Last_Starfighter" src="http://www.fastlanemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/mariel_Jaffe_zac_efron_DJFoothill_Fast_Lane_Magazine_remake_The_Last_Starfighter.jpg" alt="mariel_Jaffe_zac_efron_DJFoothill_Fast_Lane_Magazine_remake_The_Last_Starfighter" width="604" height="473" /> </a></p>
<p>The Fast Lane Magazine Remake would star Zac Efron as Alex Rogan, and Mariel Jaffe as his gorgeous girlfriend Maggie living in the Starlight, Starbright trailer park. You know, the place where Alex and Maggie left for the stars!</p>
<p>If you can think of any we might have missed let us know by leaving a comment below AND include who you would cast to play the lead roles!</p>

<p>Continuing our 80&#8242;s throwback week, we bring you this horrific video of Stevie B Dreaming of Love! Yes back in the 80&#8242;s our music videos for the most part sucked, but it was fun! <strong>Stevie B</strong> (<strong>Steven Bernard Hill</strong>) is an American singer, <span id="more-7377"></span>songwriter, and record producer who was influential in the Latin freestyle and High-Energy, mostly from Miami dance music scene of the late 1980s. Also known as the King of Freestyle, Stevie B is perhaps best known for his 1990 number-one hit &#8220;Because I Love You (The Postman Song).&#8221; So check it out and show some love!</p>

<p>I said last week that we were gonna go back. Back to the days when Aqua Net was the stock to have, florescent colors were the norm, and the coolest cats on tv were two guys named Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs.  You know, the decade we found out that Goonies were in fact good enough.<span id="more-7367"></span></p>
<p>We had the best times back then. It was the decade that gave us Atari, Nintendo, the Commodore 64, Apple IIe, and the CD! Back when the &#8220;M&#8221; in Mtv meant MUSIC! We had Pac Man, Rubics, Ferris and all we wanted to do was relax! So this week we&#8217;re gonna get into our borrowed <strong><a title="June 2010 Star Cars Issue [DIGITAL ISSUE]" href="http://www.fastlanemag.com/june-2010-star-cars-issue-digital-issue/" target="_blank">time machine</a></strong> and head back. Back to the 80&#8242;s!</p>

<p>It&#8217;s hard to believe that the‚ <strong>1980s</strong> ended more than 20 years ago. Then again, maybe we just don&#8217;t want to believe the 80s ended that long ago. Either way, it was a pretty long time ago, we do remember quite a bit of the music, fashion, the hair (oh, the hair) and, most importantly of all, the cars. Those four era-defining touchstones often came together in TV ads and promotional films. Here are 20 of our favorite such videos, preserved in all their fluffy-mane-babe-filled, giant-TURBO-decaled glory. Radical!</p>
<p>So after the jump check out the best ads for cars from the 1980&#8242;s<span id="more-3909"></span></p>
<h3>1985 Renault Alliance</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QErNhQwxkI4" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QErNhQwxkI4" /></object></p>
<p>Watching this promo film for the convertible version of the &#8220;<strong>Renault Alliance </strong>“ a vehicle that was based on the‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/renault">Renault</a> <strong>9</strong> but modified for American tastes and assembled in <strong>AMC</strong>&#8216;s Kenosha, Wisconsin factory (Renault having owned American Motors Corporation at the time) “ make us assume the marketing department just put a list of things on a chalkboard and then challenged themselves to put it all together into a semi-coherent presentation. Elementary special effects? Yep. Breakdancing? Most certainly. Mimes? Damn straight! Unlike most recipes for jambalaya, though, this hodgepodge probably won&#8217;t have you asking for seconds.</p>
<h3>1988 Cadillac Full Line</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IaZpHSnjprI" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IaZpHSnjprI" /></object></p>
<p>Throughout the 80s, each of  <strong>GM</strong>&#8216;s American divisions had a schmaltzy-but-catchy jingle that would gleefully burrow itself so deep into your brain that the only way to really get it out was to jam an icepick up your nostril, which is impractical for folks who prefer to continue living. We&#8217;ll get to some of the others later, but this <strong>Cadillac</strong> full line spot from 1988 has visuals that are sure to make you giggle if you know anything about Cadillacs from the 80s.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>People who could afford big-f*cking-yachts and private jets did not buy <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/cadillac">Cadillacs</a> in those days when the brand arguably hit rock bottom; they bought <strong>Mercedes-Benze</strong>s‚ <strong>BMW</strong>s and other yuppi emobiles. No, people who bought the General&#8217;s prestige cars back then were retirees, creating a stigma among younger well-to-do types that has only recently been shaken off. Having said all that, we still kinda dig the <strong>Allante</strong>.</p>
<h3>1986 Lincoln Full Line</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w_v1onUZ8r8" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w_v1onUZ8r8" /></object></p>
<p>In the 80s, it was far less of a taboo for car companies to call out the competition by name than it is now. And one of the most famous (Infamous?) such ads was made by <strong>Lincoln</strong>, which took  <strong>GM</strong> to task for its downsized, front-drive‚ <strong>C-body</strong> luxury cars (<strong>Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight</strong>, <strong>Buick Electra</strong> and <strong>Cadillac DeVille/Fleetwood</strong>) which had been introduced the year before. And to be honest Lincoln had a pretty valid point; even today, few people would mistake a <strong>Town Car</strong> <strong>Continental</strong> or <strong>Mark VII</strong> for their more pedestrian, <strong>Panther-</strong> and <strong>Fox-platform</strong> cousins.</p>
<h3>1984 Plymouth/Dodge/Chrysler</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Y4hfBfUyg8" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Y4hfBfUyg8" /></object></p>
<p>Not many company leaders appear in commercials, but‚ <strong>Lee Iacocca</strong> showed up in many early “80s&#8221; adverts for <strong>Plymouth</strong>, <strong>Dodge</strong> and <strong>Chrysler</strong> to convince American car buyers that the company that came within a whisker of bankruptcy was not only viable, but worthy of their consideration. Judging by the jump in sales all three brands experienced around that time at the hands of the <strong>K-cars</strong> and their minivan cousins, Mr. Iacocca&#8217;s pitches worked. Suffice to say, he was the right man at the right time for‚ <strong>Chrysler</strong>. Too bad they couldn&#8217;t have had him or someone like him about, oh, 30 years later.</p>
<h3>1984 Chevrolet Corvette</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CP7ijUkgc-4" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CP7ijUkgc-4" /></object></p>
<p>By 1984 computers and digital technology were evolving at breakneck speed, working their way into more and more assets of our lives. The automotive realm was no exception, as <strong>Chevrolet</strong> played up the sophistication of the new-for-84 fourth generation <strong>Corvette</strong>. But while the <strong>C4</strong> was a quantum leap over the <strong>C3</strong>, a lot of the tech bits (like the <strong>350 cubic inch L83 V8 </strong>Ceasefire, er, Crossfire Fuel Injection and Doug Nash 4+3-speed manual tranny) have aged even worse than those‚ <em>Tron</em>-tastic graphics.</p>
<h3>1984 Volkswagen GTI</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3zcm4oS9IaM" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3zcm4oS9IaM" /></object></p>
<p><strong>Volkswagen</strong> has almost always had clever advertisements, both of the print and TV varieties. Thus, this hoonage-packed montage of the <strong>Rabbit</strong>-based <strong>GTI Mark 1</strong> set to a German rework (though… is uttered using the English pronunciations of the letters, a necessary evil considering the German phonetics, …gay-tay-ee, would confuse the hell out of American audiences) of Ronnie and the <strong>Daytona&#8217;s</strong> Little <strong>GTO</strong> ‚ was par for the course. Over the top? A bit, but you don&#8217;t get the impression the ad agency was trying super hard, either. Many of <strong>VW</strong>&#8216;s modern ads retain most of the cheekiness, but not all of it. And that&#8217;s just sad.</p>
<h3>1986 Toyota Pickup 4&#215;4 Turbo</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tMtOkefNxD4" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tMtOkefNxD4" /></object></p>
<p>Many of you young whippersnappers (roughly age 18 and under) don&#8217;t remember what <strong>Toyota</strong> was like before it (proverbially speaking) got its hair cut, started wearing suits, and quit addressing everyone as Dude. We, on the other hand, do, and are here to tell you the company could build fun, semi-quirky cars and trucks and peddle them with campy commercials with the best of them. We offer up this spot for the turbocharged 4&#215;4 pickup (It makes one whole horsepower more than a new <strong>Prius</strong>!) as proof. Break those chains that hold you now, <strong>Toyota</strong>, and let your freak flag fly once more!</p>
<h3>1986 Ford Taurus</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UFzqZxGcNHI" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UFzqZxGcNHI" /></object></p>
<p>It&#8217;s hard to overstate what a radical departure from the American sedan norm the original <strong>Ford Taurus</strong> was when it was introduced in 1986. Its aerodynamic styling (Most of its rivals still looked like they had been drawn with rulers and T-squares.) and front-wheel-drive certainly gave the competition pause, at least initially. But we can&#8217;t help wondering: Can it still be considered singing if there&#8217;s a shortage of rhyming?</p>
<h3>1984 Audi 5000 S</h3>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2sEl4Uz08GQ" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2sEl4Uz08GQ" /></object></p>
<p>As groundbreaking as the Taurus was among the domestics, it wasn&#8217;t a completely original concept. The contemporaryÀšÃ‚ <strong>Audi 5000</strong> was easy to spot as its inspiration. TheÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/ford">Ford</a>, however, lacked the Audiۉ€ž¢s solid German engineering, sophisticated electronics, and variants that were turbocharged, AWD or a combination of the two. It also, to the relief of Ford execs, lacked theÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/audi">Audi</a>ۉ€ž¢s ہ€œunintended acceleration€Â stigma, which would blow up big time a couple years later thanks to a CBS-led witch hunt that almost drove the company from our shores altogether.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1984 Oldsmobile Full Line</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jP2wrUMIVD8" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jP2wrUMIVD8" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Remember how we said each GM brand had its own earworm-ish song back in the days when MTV still, you know, played music videos? This was<strong>Oldsmobile</strong>ۉ€ž¢s answer, premiering for 1984. Two things about this ad really strike us: First, the ۉ€ž¢84 Olds lineup was pretty broad, with the humbleÀšÃ‚ <strong>J-body Firenza</strong> at the bottom and the leviathanÀšÃ‚ <strong>C-body Ninety-Eight</strong> (which was in its final year as a V8, rear-drive, body-on-frame dreadnaught) at the top. Second, the career of the one and onlyÀšÃ‚ <strong>Tim Allen</strong> has come full circle, as he is again on the payroll of GMۉ€ž¢s marketing department, this time providing voiceovers forÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a>ۉ€ž¢s ads.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1987 Isuzu I-Mark</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y4eOOlSxr_c" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/y4eOOlSxr_c" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When it comes to TV pitchmen of the €Ëœ80s,ÀšÃ‚ <strong>David Leisure</strong> as pathological liar<strong>Joe Isuzu</strong> has to rank as one of the most recognizable. The outrageous claims he made aboutÀšÃ‚ <strong>Isuzu</strong> vehicles (which were offset by large subtitles conveying the accurate information to keep the lawyers happy) are the stuff of legend. Take the above spot, for example. Itۉ€ž¢s just silly enough to make you giggle, but judging by Isuzuۉ€ž¢s perennial back-of-the-pack status when it sold cars and light trucks in the U.S. (Seriously, who among you remember what you were doing when they announced they were pulling out of the U.S. market?) it wasnۉ€ž¢t enough to cause stampedes on Isuzu dealers.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1985 AMC/Jeep/Renault Full Line</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ETFYnNjPTtc" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ETFYnNjPTtc" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>More love for the Franco-American tag team? Why yes, thanks for asking. But how can you not love a compilation of quick cuts of stock footage of all ofÀšÃ‚ <strong>AMC</strong>,ÀšÃ‚ <strong>Jeep</strong> and Renault models for 1985 set to the Pointer Sistersۉ€ž¢ ہ€œIۉ€ž¢m So Excited€Â? In good faith you cannot. But syncing up on-board footage of weaving through a slalom with the line ہ€œIۉ€ž¢m about to lose control and I think I like it€Â?ÀšÃ‚ <em>Merde</em>€Â¦</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1988 Buick Brand</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EWXSvCu1h4" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EWXSvCu1h4" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Moving on toÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/buick">Buick</a>ۉ€ž¢s gets-stuck-in-your-head-in-ways-Rebecca-Black-can-only-dream-of song, we find more warm and fuzzy visuals and lyrics, with an added dose of patriotism thrown in for good measure. What we donۉ€ž¢t find, interestingly, is the full line of ۉ€ž¢88 Buicks. NoÀšÃ‚ <strong>Skyhawks</strong>, noÀšÃ‚ <strong>Skylarks</strong> and, most galling of all in our opinion, noÀšÃ‚ <strong>Estate Wagons</strong>. How in the Sam Hill are you going to convince consumers that the Great American Road belongs to you when you donۉ€ž¢t show off the great American road trip ride?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbodiesel</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P0Irn8DuTvg" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P0Irn8DuTvg" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As crazy as this sounds now,ÀšÃ‚ <strong>diesel cars</strong> made up almost three-quarters of<a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/mercedes-benz">Mercedes-Benz</a>ۉ€ž¢s U.S. sales during parts of the early 1980s. Think about that. Not even Toyota can claim that kind of take rate with hybrids today. And the car that arguably led the charge was theÀšÃ‚ <strong>W123-body 300D</strong>. Slow by todayۉ€ž¢s standards and dated-looking even in ۉ€ž¢84, the 300D (like all W123 oil-burners) was and is tougher than Chuck Norris wearing a unitard made out of diamonds. Hell, cockroaches will be driving them while munching on Twinkies long after we humans are gone. If that doesnۉ€ž¢t make them worthy additions to the 3.0L Benz family shown in the ad, please explain what does.</p>

<h3>1987 Pontiac Brand</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pG8TaZrJ74s" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pG8TaZrJ74s" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Continuing the GM March of Jingles, we come toÀšÃ‚ <strong>Pontiac</strong>. For most of the second half of the 20th century,ÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/pontiac">Pontiac</a> was positioned as GMۉ€ž¢s fun-loving, sporty division. One look at theÀšÃ‚ <strong>Fiero</strong> andÀšÃ‚ <strong>Trans-Am</strong> confirmed that. So what if theÀšÃ‚ <strong>Grand Am</strong> andÀšÃ‚ <strong>Sunbird</strong> donۉ€ž¢t quite fit the same mold? At least they looked decent for their day. Then again, the fact that most of this commercial was shot at night or in low-light conditions made that a moot point.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1984 Nissan 300ZX</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hZh42W93h1Y" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hZh42W93h1Y" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Remember when turbocharging used to be a big deal? Nowadays you can find turbo engines in everything from small hatchbacks like theÀšÃ‚ <strong>Mini Cooper S</strong> to trucks like theÀšÃ‚ <strong>Ford F-150</strong>. But in 1984, whenÀšÃ‚ <strong>Nissan</strong> introduced the<strong>300ZX</strong> with an availableÀšÃ‚ <strong>turbocharged 3.0L V6</strong>, it wasÀšÃ‚ <em>huuuuge</em> news. How huge? TryÀšÃ‚ <strong>200hp</strong>. Yeah, we know, there are probably some riding lawnmowers with that much power these days. But that ۉ€ž¢84ÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/corvette">Corvette</a> we saw earlier? That thing madeÀšÃ‚ <strong>205hp</strong> from aÀšÃ‚ <strong>5.7L V8</strong>,ÀšÃ‚ <em>and</em> you couldnۉ€ž¢t get it at your Datsun dealer.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1985 BMW 735i</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ySdHr2s9z9s" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ySdHr2s9z9s" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Lately Audi has been billing itself as the engineering-centric alternative to the snooty, more established luxury brands. A quarter century ago (Ye gods it hurts to say that€Â¦), though,ÀšÃ‚ <strong>BMW</strong> was professing to be that manufacturer, boasting that its prestige lay under the hood and behind each wheel. You could argue that that in itself was being pretentious, but the fact of the matter is mostÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/bmw">BMW</a>s since this commercial first aired were purchased by style-conscious slaves to status who care not one whit about how stable and entertaining their Bimmer is in the turns. How much you wanna bet Audi will one day be in the same position?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1989 Lexus LS400</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kzjESxiN850" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kzjESxiN850" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Speaking of shaking up the luxury market, the debut ofÀšÃ‚ <strong>Lexus</strong> in 1989 definitely caused its share of chaos. To show how serious the new brand was about taking the fight to the Europeans (the American luxury marques had all but given up on everyone but senior citizens and livery companies by then),ÀšÃ‚ <a href="http://www.sub5zero.com/category/tags/lexus">Lexus</a> chose to showcase the flagshipÀšÃ‚ <strong>LS400</strong> in rather extreme demonstrations of its advanced technology and engineering features. The most memorable of these is seen above, as it illustrated the engineۉ€ž¢s remarkable smoothness. Itۉ€ž¢s also inspired spoofs and tests of its accuracy. Not many BMW or Mercedes-Benz spots can claim that.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1988 Chevrolet Brand</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/smM2xhmxiOc" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/smM2xhmxiOc" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The final stop on the GM jingle tour is Chevrolet. Now Chevrolet had some memorable jingles and taglines before ہ€œThe Heartbeat of America,€Â but none of them have had quite the staying power after being replaced as this campaign did. This despite the fact that, with the obvious exception of the<strong>Camaro</strong> and Corvette, this period wasnۉ€ž¢t exactly the brandۉ€ž¢s golden age. Still, then, as before and as now, Chevy is an iconic name in American pop culture, due at least in part to marketing like this that plays up that reputation.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>1985 Plymouth Duster</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><object width="480" height="395" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1ZGwGFpjFxI" /><embed width="480" height="395" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1ZGwGFpjFxI" /></object></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Finally, we come to what is almost certainly the most €Ëœ80s car commercial (if not for any product) under the sun. Plymouthۉ€ž¢sÀšÃ‚ <strong>Turismo</strong> (a sporty, three-door relative of theÀšÃ‚ <strong>Horizon</strong> econobox) was available with a package that set nostalgic Moparistasۉ€ž¢ hearts aflutter ۉ‚¬Å“ÀšÃ‚ <strong>Duster</strong>. But to get the kids on board with the neo-Duster, Chrysler decided to go in with guns (the figurative kind, not the ones you could have bought fromÀšÃ‚ <strong>Oliver North</strong>) blazing. The result was this loosely-disguised music video shot on a set that motoring savantÀšÃ‚ <strong><a href="http://murileemartin.com/wordpress/">Murilee Martin</a></strong> succinctly described as a coke factory (No, not the soft drink&#8230;). Hey, thisÀšÃ‚ <em>is</em> the €Ëœ80s weۉ€ž¢re talking about. The hair, the music, the clothes, the neon, the hyper-exaggerated dance moves€Â¦itۉ€ž¢s all here, and itۉ€ž¢s all gnarlier than a DayGlo green L.A. Gear-branded Walkman.</p>
