A San Diego-area firm enables the wealthy to show in their home theaters movies that are still at the multiplex. The cost: $35,000 in equipment and $500 to $600 a film.

They were planning to spend nearly $500,000 on a home theater. What was an additional $35,000 to show first-run movies?

When Ken and Carol Schultz began remodeling their 10,000-square-foot San Diego-area residence, they spared no expense on a screening room. The couple tricked it out with custom-built armchairs with heat and massage functions, and a Runco 3-D-capable projector with a price of about $100,000.

But the most unusual feature of the theater is a $35,000 device that offers 24-hour rentals of first-run movies. For $500 a film ($600 for 3-D), the Schultzes can show movies the same day they screen at the local multiplex.

The Schultzes are not members of the exclusive “Bel-Air circuit” — a few hundred producers, writers, actors and executives who mostly live on the Westside and receive copies of first-run films from movie studios, often just as they’re released to theaters.

Instead, these Rancho Santa Fe film fans, who also own a West Hollywood condominium they bought from actor Matthew Perry, are willing to pay a premium to screen movies as the Hollywood moguls do.

They didn’t blink at the cost of the movies or the system, built by Prima Cinema Inc.

“When the projector costs three times that, you don’t pay attention to the Prima cost,” said Ken Schultz, an energy company investor who made his money in solar panels. “We have boxes at the Hollywood Bowl, and we go to Disney Concert Hall to see Dudamel. Even if we watch 10 to 12 movies a year on Prima, it is still a fraction of our overall entertainment budget.”

The Schultzes are self-described film buffs and prominent donors to the UCLA Film & Television Archive. They recently used the system to screen the comedies “Admission” and “Identity Thief” in their Art Deco home theater. They did it on the same weekends the pictures opened in theaters.

Prima, which was founded in 2010 and launched its service last year, is banking on more customers like the Schultzes. The Carlsbad, Calif., company’s chief executive, Jason Pang, declined to disclose sales figures but said Prima needs to tap only a small percentage of the total number of very affluent Americans to be successful.

“There are thousands of people out there, if not tens of thousands of people, that could buy this product,” Pang said. “We found the secret sauce to make billionaires act like little giddy schoolchildren.”

A survey of 1,000 U.S. home builders found that 29% of residences they built in 2011 included home theaters, up from 20% a year earlier, according to market research firm Parks Associates.

Patrick Calderone, president of AVX Design & Integration, a West Los Angeles home theater design and installation firm, is one of 15 authorized Prima dealers in the L.A. area. Calderone said that for high-end customers — who spend as much as $2 million on their theaters — the price of the device is in line with other components. He added, though, that “telling someone the movie is $500 to watch is the only time you see them wince, even though they probably spend that when they go to dinner with their wife.”

So far, Prima has deals with Universal Pictures and independents Magnolia Pictures and Cinedigm. It also offers movies from Universal’s Focus Features division and is said to be in talks with Lionsgate to carry the company’s films.

Prima may not pose much of a threat to the Bel-Air circuit. Pang conceded that folks on the circuit already enjoy a high level of convenience but said that access to films is dependent on relationships: “Just because you are on the Bel-Air circuit doesn’t mean you have a relationship with every studio.”

There are also costs to the circuit. Many people who receive films from studios are required to hire a courier who, for a fee of at least $250, will retrieve a digital copy of a movie and then return it to the studio.

And old-school circuit members who still use 35-millimeter projectors must hire projectionists, who typically charge $90 an hour with a four-hour minimum, said Jess Daily, the former chief projectionist at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater, who runs screenings for three people on the circuit.

At least one member of the circuit was skeptical of the Prima service.

“The speed of technological change … and the reality of spending $35,000 for, say, that 40 times you watch it in your screening salon, and $500 a pop for the privilege, is a poor investment that will get little traction,” said Peter Guber, the former head of Sony Pictures Entertainment who is now chairman of Mandalay Entertainment Group, in an email.

If it is successful, Prima could run afoul of the country’s movie theater owners, as Universal Pictures did when, in 2011, the studio planned to offer its “Tower Heist” via video-on-demand services three weeks after the comedy hit theaters. The movie would have cost $60.

I got the opportunity to have a fun and open conversation with the co-star of the Mark Wahlburg movie Broken City which directed by Allen Hughes is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, also featuring Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta Jones and Jeffrey Wright. The movie gets off to a fast start as NYPD detective Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) is arrested for the murder of Mikey Tavarez, who raped and murdered the sixteen-year-old sister of Taggart’s girlfriend Natalie Barrow (Natalie Martinez).

His friend, Captain Carl Fairbanks (Jeffrey Wright) asks Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) for help, and Hostetler eliminates the evidence against Taggart. Tavarez’s death is ruled as self-defense, and Taggart is forced to leave the police. Seven years later, Taggart is a private detective on the verge of bankruptcy when he’s hired by Hostetler to find out who his wife Cathleen Hostetler (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is having an affair with.

Helped by his assistant, Katy Bradshaw (Alona Tal), Taggart learns that Cathleen is seeing Paul Andrews (Kyle Chandler), the campaign manager of Hostetler’s rival in the upcoming elections, Jack Valliant (Barry Pepper).

So now that you know all of that lets get on with our talk with Natalie Martinez who was in North Carolina shooting a television show when we spoke.

Oh, and I should mention Natalie’s voice. She has that sultry almost raspy sounding voice that you just want to listen to. Almost as if she should be belting out some really beautiful jazz tunes.

FastLaneMagazine: Hello Natalie. Thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. I am wondering where you’re at!

Natalie Martinez: I am in Wilmington N. Carolina right now shooting a show called Under The Dome. It’s based on a book written by Steven King and Steven Spielberg is producing it. Wilmington is a very pleasant city.

FLM: OK; in Broken City your movie with Mark Wahlberg they’ve got you playing a Puerto Rican, but you’re Cubana. How did that come to pass in character Development?

NM: (Laughing) Um, you know what? That’s what they wanted. The area we were supposed to be from has a large concentration of Puerto Ricans. At the end of the day of course I’m acting, so I don’t have to be what I really am.

FLM: Absolutely but that was kind of a funny thing with the friendly rivalry between Cubans and Puerto Ricans.

NM: Yeah yeah yeah. My father lived in Puerto Rico for about 15 years and I have family who are Puerto Rican. So it’s very similar.

FLM: Being Cubana – Do you cook?

NM: Oh my god I’m Cubana so of course! My mother would kill me if I didn’t.

FLM: Favorite thing to make?

NM: In fact I was going to make vaca frita (“fried cow”) today. You have to let the beans soak overnight, and I forgot to do that. So I know how to cook so that’s fun for me.

FLM: Oh see and no one invited us! SO, you’ve done Broken City and End Of Watch and a lot of television. What is the difference between doing TV and Movies.

NM: The time commitment. You live breath and do a movie for a short period of time. But with TV you have an ensamble cast and you’re doing it day to day, and growing with your character. Every week we’re getting a new script and learning just as much as the public is. In a movie you get the beginning middle and end all at once, and you know the path of your character.

FLM: We’ve heard too from other actors that TV is a faster than movies.

NM: It is much faster. You shoot, get it in and it airs. I’m shooting about 45 pages a week, as where you have a script that’s 100 pages in 3 months. You have about 6 – 9 days to shoot each episode. So turn over is a lot quicker.

FLM: That’s a very dramatic different. But OK the eternal question that I have to ask is what was it like working with him?

NM: Mark’s a very attractive human being, and I know a lot of girls are fans. Knowing him on a personal level also as a professional he is a really great human being, and devoted family man. Just a generally good dude.

FLM: He does seem that way the few times I’d seen him he had that guy’s guy energy.

NM: He really is a man’s man. Just a regular guy.

FLM: So the acting thing. Was that by design or did you sort of fall into it?

NM: Oh I definately fell into it. I didn’t think I wanted this, I never thought of this as a career at all. My mom made me do a modeling competition and I won and that opened several other doors and here I am in Wilmington North Carolina shooting a Steven Spielberg show. You know, I wanted to be a nurse. A midwife actually, delivering babies. That’s pretty much what I wanted to do growing up.

The opportunities arose to do this, and I took them.

FLM: It had to be rather scary initially to make that transition into something that was so uncertain. You know. There’s no security!

NM: No there isn’t. What’s crazy is that I didn’t even think about it. I started modeling 10 years ago and one thing led to another, and I’ve been acting for six or seven, and I have to look around sometimes and think wow this is what I do for a living. Like this is my job. Like how did I get to this?
How do I memorize these lines? Who taught me to do this?

FLM: (Laughing)

NM: I’m in awe sometimes. But when you’re on a path like that sometimes You know when you just go with it, and it just kind of goes by, and I really don’t look back much.

FLM: You were also supposed to be on what was one of our favorite shows ‘Chuck’ but for some reason you weren’t. What happened with that? I know it’s a bit off topic, but we’re going with the flow here. (LAUGHS)

NM: Oh yeah. You know; with the blonde, Yvonne his partner and I was the neighbor and he had a girlfriend at the same time. And I was the neighbor that he had a crush on, and they thought it would just be too many girls for this one geek.

So we shot the pilot and here we were these three girls falling all over him, and I mentioned I was the neighbor he had a crush on so they couldn’t find a real good path for my character so I was writen out of the show.

FLM: So tell us, what was your life like growing up? Your childhood. I’m guessing you had a regular youth.

NM: My mother is one of 6 girls so I grew up in a big family. I Went to catholic school private school from middle school through high school, hung out with friends had pets you know pretty normal. Grew up in Miami in a regular Cuban household. I’m actually the first of my family born here in the U.s. But I’m sure that it was more fun than I’m making it sound here but it was pretty normal to me.

FLM: So unlike Selena Gomez you were just a normal kid who grew up normally and worked your way up into the position you find yourself in now.

NM: Oh yes absolutely. I mean I have a huge family and I had to move all the way across the country away from my friends and family and everything I knew in order to work.

FLM: Right I keep telling people ‘If you’re comitted but live in podunk you need to move where the work actually is.’

NM: Yes absolutely. Everytime I go back home my grandmother doesn’t understand and is always asking me if I’m going to stay there and I have to tell her that no I can’t stay because I live in Los Angeles.

FLM: How would you suggest that someone breaks into the industry?

NM: I really can’t answer that since I got into the business in a round about sort of way, but you have to really have a thick skin to put yourself out there, and you have to get a good manager and an agent that will fight for you. It’s not going to be easy and you will have to take a lot of rejection and work really hard to get an opportunity.

But certainly also take some classes to see if you even have what it takes to really pursue this. When you get good feedback and people are responding to you try it out. Yeah I think starting out with a class where you can really learn what you’re doing is the best way.

FLM: Thank you so much for taking the time to hang out with us.

NM: (Brushing her teeth) Yes absolutely, I’m sorry I was brushing my teeth.

FLM: (Laughing) Because that’s naturally what one does on the phone. Trust me we’ve had worse! But it was great talking with you, and next time you’re in LA we should do a shoot for a feature!

NM: Yeah for sure! Just let me know! But bye for now!

FLM: Bye and we look forward to seeing you in your next project!

All in all as horrible as I am as an interviewer it was really fun talking with Natalie Martinez and we do look very forward to seeing her next projects.

Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg lead an all-star cast in 2 Guns, an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent. For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip.

Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

Here’s our listing of the the films hitting theaters this week that would be on our list of go see if we hadn’t already seen them months ago. So check them out and let us know which one(s) you’re excited to see. Of course we’ve chosen stuff for us guys. Things with lots of kick ass fight sequences, explosions and hot chicks with guns! And yes there are a couple other options as well they may not be so adrenaline fueled!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

PG-13 110 min – Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Director: Jon M. Chu
Stars: Dwayne Johnson, D.J. Cotrona, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis

The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The future looks bleak for Duke, but what a decision made by the studio to postpone the release of the Joe sequel for almost a year in order to up the Channing Tatum factor after reaction to the first trailer proved his movie-star status. We’re bracing for a box-office takeover this weekend and perhaps an announcement that a third installment will be made.

We of course questioned the decision to make a G.I. Joe movie without the staple Scarlet played by the lovely Rachael Nichols (@RachaelNichols1) But they threw in Bruce Willis to make up for it! I still say they should have kept Scarlet but hey that may just be me!

 Tyler Perry’s Temptation (2013)

PG-13 111 min – Drama
Director: Tyler Perry
Stars: Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood, Kim Kardashian

An ambitious married woman’s temptation by a handsome billionaire leads to betrayal, recklessness, and forever alters the course of her life. We admire Tyler Perry for creating his own empire, brushing off the Alex Cross failure (easier than most other A-listers), and resetting his focus on alternating Madea/non-Madea films on his own schedule. This particular project first caught attention as Kim Kardashian was cast in a supporting role, while others remarked at how much star Jurnee Smollett had grown up since Eve’s Bayou. Thematically, Perry isn’t breaking any new ground, and we expect him to regain his footing here.

We have to commend Kim Kardashian on her quest to get that damn star on Hollywood Blvd. You can bet that you’ll be seeing a lot more of her on various TV shows, and in Movies in the very near future. Maybe a Kim K Album? Let’s hope not!

The Host (2013)

PG-13 125 min – Action | Adventure | Romance | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Director: Andrew Niccol
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, Jake Abel, Diane Kruger

When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s other lit sensation does not have any sequels in place just yet, though Meyer said they have been outlined. We have no idea if the studio — upstart distributor Open Road Films, who’ve had a couple hits with The Grey and End of Watch — has a franchise-starter on their hands, but the marketing has been consistent and solid. The YA audience tends to be a blind spot for studios; recently, the idea of a captive audience targeted by a major promotional push couldn’t get Beautiful Creatures to break $20 million yet.

Hugh Jackman Russell Crowe Anne Hathaway Eddie Redmayne

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Hugh Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

THIS IS 40

Leslie Mann Paul Rudd Megan Fox Albert Brooks

After years of marriage, Pete (Paul Rudd) lives in a house of all females: wife Debbie (Leslie Mann) and their two daughters, eight-year-old Charlotte (Iris Apatow) and 13-year-old Sadie (Maude Apatow). As he struggles to keep his record label afloat, he and Debbie must figure out how to forgive, forget and enjoy the rest of their lives…before they kill each other. In his fourth directorial outing, Apatow’s new comedy captures what it takes for one family to flourish in the middle of a lifetime together. What emerges is a deeply honest portrait of the challenges and rewards of marriage and parenthood in the modern age. Through the filmmaker’s unblinking lens, we follow one couple’s three-week navigation of sex and romance, career triumphs and financial hardships, aging parents and maturing children.

Lincoln

Sally Field Daniel Day-Lewis Tommy Lee Jones

During President Lincoln’s tumultuous final months in office, he pursues a course of action to end the Civil War, unite the country and abolish slavery. Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

Oh man, Tony Stark is getting ready to kick some serious ass. Are you ready for Iron Man 3? The $200 million epic hits theaters on May 3rd, and if this latest look at the flick doesn’t get you excited, nothing will. This time around, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) wrestles with some inner demons, faces a new villain named The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and unleashes a team of Iron Men to help him save the world.

Watch the full madness unfold right after the jump:

From the trailer, the film’s aesthetic looks grittier than the previous Iron Man outings. In particular, we’ll be paying special attention to the film’s visual effects, since this is the first movie in the series produced without the help of Industrial Light and Magic. We’ll see if the five VFX companies that worked on it can keep up with that legendary powerhouse—so far, it certainly looks like they have. The film will also be the largest Dolby Atmos release to date—it’ll hit using the new immersive theater sound in 450 theaters across the world.

But you know what? Forget all that for now. Just sit back and enjoy Iron Man getting his ass kicked, kicking ass right back, and everything in between.

From the writers of The Hangover comes a movie 21 years in the making. Straight-A college student Jeff Chang (JUSTIN CHON of the Twilight Saga) has always done what’s expected of him. But when his two best friends Casey (SKYLAR ASTIN of Pitch Perfect, Wreck-It Ralph) and Miller (MILES TELLER of The Spectacular Now, Project X, Rabbit Hole) surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, he decides to do what’s unexpected for a change, even though his critical medical school interview is early the next morning. What was supposed to be one beer becomes one night of chaos, over indulgence and utter debauchery in this outrageous comedy.

Not long ago, Casey, Miller and Jeff Chang were as close as friends could be. Sure, Casey is a bit more buttoned-up compared to Miller’s wild child, with Jeff Chang serving as their foil, studious and ambitious, but that’s why they’re best buddies; they complete each other. Going to different colleges may have put physical distance between them, but they’re still as tight as ever. This trip to Northern Pacific University in Seattle is about attaining newfound glory; the three of them finally being able to party freely in the eyes of the law, unencumbered by the nuisance of fake IDs and bothersome bouncers.

Only problem: Jeff Chang’s overbearing Doctor-father has a Med School interview scheduled for 8AM the next morning, and he’s determined his son follows in his footsteps as a physician. Luckily, Miller offers a compromise: only one drink, one single drink. It’s only fair since he and Casey traveled all this way to surprise Jeff Chang, and they’ll even have him back by midnight. Certainly sounds reasonable enough, until that one drink turns into many.

Barhopping for Jeff Chang’s birthday is quickly becoming a night for the ages, complete with copious shots and mechanical-bull rides. Even Casey loosens up enough to hit it off with Jeff Chang’s friend Nicole (SARAH WRIGHT of TV’s Parks and Recreation), a smoking hot coed. It’s as though nothing can go wrong! That is, until Jeff Chang starts blacking out and it’s time to take him home. Naturally, this should spell the end of the evening, only Miller and Casey are in unfamiliar territory; they have no idea where Jeff Chang lives!

With the hours till Jeff Chang’s crucial interview ticking away, Casey and Miller embark on an epic quest to put their drunken friend to bed. Along their journey, they draw the ire of a Latina sorority, the NPU mascot, an angry buffalo, and Randy (JONATHAN KELTZ of Breach), Nicole’s cheerleader boyfriend. But when their friendship is called into question, that turns out to be the biggest test of them all.

Making their directorial debuts are JON LUCAS and SCOTT MOORE (writers of The Hangover, The Change-Up, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past), who also penned the script. Produced by DAVID HOBERMAN and TODD LIEBERMAN (The Fighter, The Muppets, The Proposal), RYAN KAVANAUGH (The Fighter) and HUGO SHONG, 21 and Over showcases a top-notch crew, including cinematographer TERRY STACEY (Safe Haven, 50/50), production designer JERRY FLEMING (Crank), key costume designer CHRISTINE WADA (Catch Me If You Can, O Brother Where Art Thou?), editor JOHN REFOUA (Avatar) and composer LYLE WORKMAN (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Win Win). The executive producers are TUCKER TOOLEY (The Fighter), JASON BECKMAN and JASON COLODNE (Safe Haven, Out of the Furnace), JASON FELTS (Limitless), RON BURKLE, LUO YAN, ANDY YAN and DAVID MANPEARL. Produced in association with Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced (Limitless),

21 And Over will be released by Relativity Media. 21 And Over is in theatres on March 1, 2013.
